Veteran’s Day: Will Mackin, Tom Bird, and the UCLA Wordcommandos
Live Stream • Q&A
WORDTheatre presents a celebration of our veterans, featuring a collection of literary work exclusively by veteran authors.
Will Mackin is a veteran of the US Navy and the author of the acclaimed short story collection Bring Out the Dog, winner of the PEN/Robert W. Bingham Prize for the best short story collection of 2018. His short fiction has appeared in The New Yorker and The Atlantic, among other places.
Thomas Bird is a veteran of the Vietnam War and the author of the new memoir The Hardest War to Love. Thomas founded the Vietnam Veterans’ Ensemble Theatre Company (VETCo) in New York, and co-produced the award-winning documentary Dear America, Letters Home From Vietnam.
The UCLA Wordcommandos, known as the “Seal Team of Veteran Writer Groups”, are a group unlike any across the country. Since 2016, Robert Morgan Fisher has led this twice-weekly writing workshop for veterans with PTSD in conjunction with UCLA and the VA, helping these men and women find their literary voices. Many of these veterans are now published writers.
